Charmes Chambertin Grande Cru 2016, Domaine de Varoilles

Intense colours, profound aromatics, finesse and elegance are the watchwords here rather than power. There are no rough edges, even in youth, the wines complemented by freshness and lightness of touch, belying underlying, restrained muscle.
Clos Saint Denis Grand Cru 2016, Domaine Heresztyn Mazzini
£ 195.00
A more elegant though markedly restrained nose features cool and pure aromas of dried flowers, high-toned red and blue pinot fruit and lovely spice nuances. The rich, refined and equally pure middle weight flavors are supple yet precise before culminating in a mineral-driven, firm, dusty and long finish where the supporting tannins are notably fine-grained. A CSD of harmony and refinement that should also age effortlessly.
Gevrey Chambertin 2020, Chateau de Marsannay

Exquisitely pretty Marsannay. Not particularly complex, but that is not the point of this wine, it’s all about pure, unadulterated pleasure. An open, generous array of fruit flavours of damsons and cherries with a floral violet perfume. Soft, generous, and velvety. 30% whole bunch fermentation.
Gevrey Chambertin Aux Etelois 2018, Château de Laborde

£ 90.00
There is more whole bunch (70%) in the 2016 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru les Champonnets, the highest used by the domaine in this growing season. Now this has a very mineral-driven bouquet, terse and linear at first, though the fruit soon comes to the surface—blackberries, briary and a hint of cassis. This is very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, well-judged acidity, weight and persistence.

WINESPECTATOR / JAMES SUCKLING (92)
The cool essence of red cherry, currant, floral and discreet wood nuances leads to detailed, punchy and precise medium-bodied flavors that possess a silky texture, all wrapped in a sappy and impressively long finale where a hint of cherry pit emerges. Good stuff.
